Things fall apart @ Book Club

For December at Book Club, we are going to be reading ‘Things Fall Apart’ by Chinua Achebe. Nigerian-born Achebe is one of Africa’s most prolific writers and ‘Things Fall Apart’, written in 1958, was one of the first African novels written in English to receive global acclaim. The title for the book comes from Yeats’ poem ‘The Second Coming’.

Okonkwo is the greatest warrior alive. His fame has spread like bushfire in West Africa and he is one of the most powerful men in his clan. But he also has a fiery temper. Determined not to be like his father, he refuses to show weakness to anyone – even if the only way he can master his feelings is with his fists. When the arrival of British colonialism and Christian missionaries threaten the traditions of his clan, Okonkwo takes violent action. Will the great man’s pride eventually destroy him?

Themes running throughout the novel include change, loneliness, abandonment, fear, and the importance of social relationships. Should be a good read, and plenty to discuss. The book is available on Amazon, but we can pass copies between us, so leave a comment if you want to link up and get hold of a copy.

We’ll be meeting on Monday 21st Dec 09 @ 7pm in Roast Coffee Shop on Lisburn Road, Belfast. If you need any more info, drop us a line at .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address)
