God’s big picture

A few months ago, I finished reading a great book by Vaughan Roberts, Rector at St Ebbe's Oxford, called 'God's Big Picture'. Presented to me by my brother for my 23rd birthday, this book went into a growing pile of books that I would "get around to some day". And I tell you - I am very glad I got around to reading this book!

This book gives a sweeping overview of the Bible, it doesn’t spend much time on any one area. Instead its main focus is to give the reader a broad overview of the whole story of the Bible, with the intention of helping the reader to have richer times reading the word. This book did exactly that for me. It walks through the entire bible from creation of the world through to the new heaven and the new earth and show how God’s plan throughout remains consistent and unchanging.

The book emphasizes a theme which underlies the stories throughout the Bible - that God is looking to establish His Kingdom. It looks at each ‘block’ of the bible, chronologically, as a certain aspect of God’s Kingdom being displayed; from the pattern of the Kingdom - which God lays down in the garden of Eden, being God’s people in God’s place under God’s rule - through to the perfected Kingdom shown in Revelation - where we are God’s people in God’s place under God’s rule.

I highly recommend this book, particularly for people struggling with reading the Bible, or finding themselves always drawn to the same areas of scripture. This book really helps see how all the Bible fits in with each other - and helps us remember that all scripture is profitable.
