Grace upon grace

John 1 v16 "And from His fulness we have all received, grace upon grace." I love the way God has a sense of humour and that He always disciplines us with tender love. My Mum came to stay over with me one night as my husband and two girls were away. She had put her rather expensive contacts lenses in her glasses case again instead of the proper little lens case thing. This is something she does often and I often give off to her about it. Anyway, first thing in the morning when we were barely human-like my inquisitive two-year old came straight into the room, promptly opened the glasses case and started to dance and jump up and down (she likes jumping, she does it a lot!) Mum shrieked and Mimi burst into tears. I ran into the room and mum explained what had happened. I bit my tongue instead of launching into “I’ve told u before...”etc (bit of role reversal I know). We found one but the other one was gone. We spent some time searching everywhere, Mimi helping even though she didn’t know what we were doing.

“Let’s pray” said Mum. “Every time I pray I get them back.” In my irritable, tired and heavy state (being on all fours 8-months pregnant, scanning the floor, Mimi jumping on my back to play, I wasn’t happy) I answered, half joking, half meaning it “Do you really think God will keep answering that prayer when you aren’t using your common sense to help yourself? I’m sorry it looks like its gone.” I walked out of the room.

As I walked up the stairs I prayed “Lord I know it’s probably too late but we could really do with finding this other one.” As I got to the top of the stairs I opened my bedroom door and just happened to glance down…there it was glinting in the sunlight that had just poured in through the window. All I could hear was…”It’s a good job My Grace doesn’t operate like yours.” I laughed out loud. I have no idea how the lens could have travelled that far and I had given up looking. I apologised to Mum and gave thanks to my God for His grace upon grace and for never giving up on us.
