IN THE CITY // Ormeau Baths Gallery
Tucked away, down a side street is this beautiful Victorian building, The Ormeau Baths Gallery. If you weren't looking for it you would be likely to miss it, and that would be a shame. This once public bath house and swimming pool was converted into a gallery in the early 90's. Belfast has a knack for turning old buildings into something great.
The Gallery plays holder to some of Belfast’s finest contemporary art. I went in there once just for kicks and there was some sort of bizarre ant farm all lit up by led lights. It was…one of a kind.
Right so there are always exhibitions going on and starting today the gallery will be displaying children’s art! I think this is so great! Giving children an opportunity to display their work in an actual gallery. This is a great way to build confidence and good self-esteem in our kids, as well as giving them a unique opportunity to have their art up and not just on their mom’s fridge //as great as that is!// but for public appreciation. For more info on that go here!
Also on Saturday’s local artists hold workshops for kids! You can check that out here!
There’s another exhibit coming up in April about artists getting back to basics, which involves lots of paintings in black and white, or black on black, or white on white. It showcases two artists - Neil Shawcross and Charles Walsh. So if you’re into minimalism this is for you.
Ormeau Baths Gallery also does workshops in art and writing, as well as other events, like film screenings, midnight performances, musical acts, talks, tours, etc. Take a look here!
The Ormeau Baths Gallery is busting with things to do and experience, and while the arts are taking a hit, I think we should take advantage of what we have just down the street. It’s free to walk around, and there is always something happening. Whether you’re an actual artist, an amateur, or an appreciator, put this on your list of things to check out.
