IN THE CITY // The Black Box
The Black Box, located in the heart of Belfast's Cathedral Quarter, has something for everyone. A music venue, art gallery, Black market, coffee shop, comedy club, and all things in between.
The cafe out front is comfortable and cosy. They serve delicious coffee and treats, and has a positive atmosphere for hanging out, or reading and writing. They serve pizza and pints as well, which in my books is always a winning combination// only downside is it’s only open Thurs- Sat 5pm-11pm //
I was there recently for a gig, and really enjoyed it. Not just the music, which was completely brilliant, but also being in the space. It’s a huge room, it wasn’t crowded or too loud. It was easy enough to move around, and the bar wasn’t hard to get to. It’s just a big black room, which would be ideal for hiring out cos it could be easily transformed into whatever you needed it to be. During the day the space looks completely different. Once a month, on a Sunday afternoon they hold the Black Market. This where designers, creators, writers and artists get to showcase their work, and we get to buy it. They sell books, and music, crafts and clothes. It’s also free to get in to!
There is always something going on. They hold a lot of music nights. Whether it’s bands, musicians, DJ sets, or dance parties! The events are all located on the front page of their website so to see what’s coming up is easily accessible. Storytelling nights are also being featured. Artists sharing original stories and art.
If you’re a creative type or have an interest in the arts or local music scene the Black Box is where it’s at. I highly suggest strolling down and taking in the sights, and sounds.
