IN THE CITY // Transpose
Transpose is a Cathedral Quarter based arts initiative designed to showcase musicians and artists alike on one night and then give space to have discussion on the arts.
I attended the last one as Before Machines was playing and those are some of our favourite boys! Our own artist in residence Hannah Wilson came down and set up a table where her lovely art was up for sale, she’ll be promoting herself again this Thursday at the second instalment of Transpose.
Transpose is held in the oldest pub in Belfast, Whites Tavern. The upstairs is an open space but has old wooden tables, and over stuffed couches strewn about, antique wall paper and low ceilings, it seems to be the perfect fit for an evening of music, art and discussion. Honestly either we left before anyone started discussing art of music or whatever or it didn’t happen. Which is cool. I actually think in that setting where it’s more gig-like and informal it would be tricky to then settle everyone to talk about art. But, power to them. We make so much music and art and the scene is quickly developing in Belfast and I think it’s great and appropriate to have a place to talk it out. To offer a critique to further someone along in their craft. To encourage local artists and meet people who share your struggle.
This Thursday is the second instalment of Transpose. Captain Cameron will be gracing the stage, and they are a must see. Temper Prophet Temper, who I have never heard of before, will be taking to the stage as well. I’ll be interested to see if they’ve rummage up a few more artists, and yes, Hannah will be there. If you are involved in the music/art scene or are just an appreciator of both you’ll enjoy the evening.
Transpose aim is simple ..“Transpose is about appreciation of art purposeful discussion, and a chance to have your thoughts provoked.”
