IN THE CITY // Ulster Festival of Art and Design

The Ulster Festival of Art and Design is in its 4th year. Combining the art colleges grad shows with accomplished and local artists work, the festival plays host to all sorts.

was in the Clements down by the Ulster Art College the other day and the booklet caught my eye. I love a quality booklet. Simple, but unusual colours, scrawly drawings, a lot of text in what can only be described as ‘little boy handwriting’, carefully jumbled together on lovely matte paper.

It kicks off with a fashion show June 1st at 7pm, showcasing 1st, 2nd and 3rd year students work. They’ve got photography, sculptures, music, film. Everything you would expect and then some. An 8 piece jazz band, an art experiment about sex in other cultures and our own, clothes designed to help clean the air, yea…there’s a workshop on the 9th for 10+11 year olds “a practical tool-making workshop’. Sounds awesome!

Take a look at their website as it does the booklet justice. There’s a ton of stuff happening. I think it’s really important to be supporting the arts, especially in Belfast. I feel like everyone //and by everyone I mean people who aren’t involved// don’t know how good the art+music scene here really is. We have a lot of young and old talent and some really amazing creative people. I believe Belfast can become cool, and unique and metro without losing it’s charm but its by supporting our own. SO GO!

Festival Begins 1st of June and ends on the 12th.
